BRANDING

THE BRIEF

Redesign the visual identity of the Théâtre National de Bordeaux with the ambition of making theatre feel more accessible and relevant to younger generations. The project also called for an exploration of experimental media to modernise the theatre’s image.

THE CONTEXT

Theatre can sometimes be perceived as formal, institutional or reserved for an older audience. The challenge was therefore to move away from this traditional image and create a visual identity that could communicate the energy, intensity and emotional diversity of theatre to a new generation.

THE IDEA

I started with something simple and universal: the scribble. A spontaneous form of expression, scribbles can communicate emotions without needing words. I developed a collection of expressive marks representing different feelings — confusion, anger, joy, surprise — and built the identity around their raw and instinctive character.

THE MAKING

The visual language combines bold typography with handwritten elements, vivid colours and expressive scribbles. For the communication materials, I played with portraits of older faces — referencing the stereotype of traditional theatre — disrupted by colourful, energetic scribbles.

THE RESULT

A bold and expressive visual identity that challenges the traditional codes of theatre while communicating its emotional and contemporary side.

IN THE WILD

The identity was developed across posters and
communication materials, creating a flexible graphic
system that could evolve with different theatrical
productions and formats.
